Why do you choose to race in Kona ? Pourquoi avoir choisi Kona?

Kona is the Super Bowl of triathlon. If you want to race against the best at one of the toughest courses in the world, you go to Kona to see how you stack up. Even though you try to take one race at a time, you always have one eye towards that big race in October.

How was your year with the KPR ?

The KPR ranking is the way we get to Kona. You have to monitor it and be smart in effort to avoid chasing points in August the best you can. I am absolutely happy with a Top 10 ranking because it allows me the opportunity to participate as one of the Top 35 females to race in Kona.

What do you think about KPR ? Que pensez-vous du KPR?

I personally think it is an appropriate system especially with the recent fine tuning of it. The rules are the same for everyone so there is no favortism. You have to plan your year to put yourself in a position to have a chance at racing in Kona. This includes races from Oct-Dec of the previous year which gets you points to qualify for Kona the next year.

When will you arrive in Kona ? Quand arriveras-tu à Kona?

In years past, we have arrived a week before the race. I have found that this does not give me enough time to acclimate to the heat and wind that make this race so difficult especially since we live in San Francisco where the temperature is much cooler! This year I have come out a month beforehand to prepare for the race and get in some quality training sessions on the course. I have never done this before and was fortunate to have enough Kona points early to enable us to make this decision. I am very grateful to be able to go this route and prepare the best we can before October 12th.

What experience do you have in Kona  ?

Quel est ton palmarès à Kona?

My experiences in Kona have been a mixed bag where the experience has been great but the results have not been too stellar. It is an honor to be able to race here and I cherish all of my times I have had on the course. However, I believe that since I come from training in 60 degree weather in San Francisco – the heat has been quite a shock to my system. I have learned from my past mistakes and can hopefully put together a race I can be proud of in 2013. I think I have raced here four times and shoot, I have forgotten about the results which were not too noteworthy. Last year I was thrilled to be in the lead bike pack when I got knocked over by a gust of wind and a pro male simultaneously hit my handlebars. Unfortunately, I hit the ground head first, resulting in a concussion. I hope to redeem myself this year!

J’espère me racheter cette année!

How do you feel just a few days before ?

How the body feels before an Ironman does not indicate how you will perform – thankfully! I have had times where I have been flat the week before with ample « WEB » (why even bother!) workouts and everything comes together on race day. However, the opposite has been true where I feel great and race day performance is lacking. All you can do is trust your plan, have confidence in your abilities and show up for the race prepared for the inevitable highs and lows of an Ironman. Having completed 49 Ironmans, I have felt firsthand the many challenges that can come at you on race day- as long as your mental fortitude is aligned with your legs – you will prevail!

What is the most difficult in this race ?

The most difficult thing about this race is the course including the wind and heat. If you have not ridden the course or run out by the energy lab, you will be very surprised by how hot it truly is and how the wind can play tricks on you. This is what understandably heckles people and everything that comes along with these two factors such as equipment setup, hydration, cramping, etc…

What is your goal this year in Kona ?

My goal in Kona is to execute my plan for racing within myself to complete a successful day. With this course, nothing goes according to plan so being prepared for everything that is thrown your way is a must to survive. It is of most importance to KCCO – keep calm, carry on the best we can.

Do you plan something for the race day ?

I perform my normal pre race Ironman routine and try not to overcomplicate things. I diagram this a lot in my upcoming manuals Life of a Triathletewww.lifeoftriathlete.com.  It is important to not do anything out of the ordinary, go through your normal routine, and try to control the things that are in your control because it is a given that something will throw a wrench into even the best laid out plans!

Je détaille cela dans mon prochain livre, « Life of a Triathlete, www.lifeoftriathlete.com« .

Who do you think will be on the podium the 12th october ?

Quel est ton pronostic pour le podium 2013?

This is always a tough question but you have to error on the side of historical results in Kona as those amazing athletes certainly deliver. There are not too many surprises in this race like Chrissie Wellington coming out of the blue to victory in her first year which was such an impressive performance.

 In absolutely no particular order:

I think the men to watch for the podium spots (such a toss up as all are so stellar!) are Pete Jacobs, Craig Alexander, Sebastian Kienle, Andreas Raelert, Freddy Van Lierde and Andy Potts – would be amazing to see an American win especially since it has been awhile!

For the women – there is just so much talent, heart, speed and strength on that line!

You can never rule out the amazing Mirinda Carfrae, Leanda Cave, Caroline Steffan, Rachel Joyce, Mary Beth Ellis, Gina Crawford, Linsey Corbin, Heather Wurtele and I could KEEP NAMING SEVERAL MORE!

Both of the men’s and women’s races are going to be thrilling!
