Aloha Racers!

We look forward to seeing you in Maui next week. As you prepare for your trip to paradise, here are a few things to think about:

First, the XTERRA TV crew is filming the race for an hour-long special and is interested in learning about the athletes racing this year.  If you or someone you know has a great story to tell, please share it by replying to this email.

About the race…

Bike Course: There are some changes in the works.  New details, printed maps, Ski Tracks and MapMyRide files will be available when the course opens for pre-riding on Wednesday, Oct. 24.  You must pick-up your race packet before you pre-ride the bike course.

Important: The course is 100% on private land, and we ask XTERRA athletes to respect the landowner’s wishes not to ride the course outside of the scheduled and approved pre-ride opportunities.  The course routes through active farms, stables, horse trails, and zip-line tours.  Mountain bikers are considered trespassers by these, and other businesses. You could be subject to arrest if you are found trespassing.

Transition: Bike racks will be numbered so place your gear in your designated section.

Aid Stations: Bike Bottles will be available on course – option of water or Gatorade – at two exchange locations at roughly mile 8 and mile 15.  PowerBar gels will be available as well.

Run Course: The run is the same as last year.  There will be five aid stations on the run, each roughly a mile apart, serving water, Gatorade and PowerBar gels.

Swim Course:  There will once again be wave starts.  We anticipate three waves – pros, age group men, and then age group women.  We’ll have an “M” style course with a short beach run in the middle. Be aware that there could be high surf at the swim beach. We recommend you practice swimming in and out of the surf break before raceday.

USATri approved skinsuits will be legal; to see a list go to http://www.usatriathlon.org/about-multisport/rulebook/approved-skinsuits.aspx

Other stuff:

Costume: Don’t forget your costume for the annual Halloween-themed post-race party on Sunday night! If you need a costume check out Savers by the airport or the Enchantress Boutique at the XTERRA Expo.

Connect: Join the Facebook Event Page for XTERRA Worlds and “like us” on Facebook (www.facebook.com/xterraplanet), follow @xterraoffroad on twitter and instagram, tweet about your XTERRA Worlds experience using hashtag #xterramaui, and have friends and family tune-in to www.xterramaui.com on raceday for coverage.  It all starts at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 6am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in New Zealand, 4pm in Brazil).

Dinner:  Both Saturday and Sunday night dinners are included in your entry and tickets for friends and family can be purchased at registration until sold-out.

Parking on Saturday and Sunday: From Honoapiilani Highway go past the main Kapalua entrance (Office Road) and take your next left at Lower Honoapiilani Road. Look for the XTERRA parking signs and staff to guide you.

Results: The chip timing system we have this year can have your swim split, bike split, and finish times automatically posted to your Facebook and Twitter timelines and/or have them sent to a mobile phone via SMS text.  To set this up go to https://register.bazumedia.com/event/tracking/eventID/5940.  Friends and family can also type your name into the search box here on raceday: http://results.bazumedia.com/event/results/event/event-5940

Note: Live timing isn’t always perfect, and results won’t be official until timing is verified.

Virtual Race Bag:  On Thursday we’ll send you an email with special discount offers from our partners, including 25% off lunch and dinner from Duke’s Beach House, Kimo’s, Hula Grill Kaanapali and Leilani’s.

Registration: At registration you must show your current USAT license (either have the card on you or on your smart phone) along with a photo ID.  Or, purchase a one-day license for $12 (cash only).

Fun Runs: If you’re traveling with friends or family let them know they can experience the run course for themselves on Saturday at the Duke’s Beach House XTERRA 10k, Hula Grill XTERRA 5k, and free Kimo’s Keiki K on Saturday morning.  Register now at xterramaui.com.

Style: Don’t cut your hair until you get here!  We’ve got Paul Mitchell stylists on hand cutting hair on Saturday and Sunday for just $15, and every penny of that goes straight to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

Education: XTERRA University, presented by Paul Mitchell – if you want the best advice on how to handle the swim, bike, or run – be sure to take in the clinics on Friday and Saturday at The Ritz.

Bike MD: Bike techs are on site at registration and will be in force on race day as well.  There is also a chance to demo (and buy) new Scott and Orbea bikes – check the booth outside the transition area and bring your helmet and pedals.

Primes:

  • Swim:  Fastest age group swimmers (male and female) win an XTERRA Vortex full wetsuit.
  • Run: Fastest male and female pro, age group, and Maui resident run times win $100 gift certificate to Leilani’s On the Beach – island fish and steaks on Kaanapali Beach at Whaler’s Village.
  • U25: Muscle Milk honors the future of XTERRA with a special prize for the top three men and women under 25.  Each will receive a logo-ed XTERRA Muscle Milk back pack filled with swag.

Outrigger Double: The “Double” award is given to the pro and amateur man and woman with the fastest combined 2013 XTERRA World Championship and Ironman Hawaii Championship times.  The top amateur man wins a 6 night stay at the Kapalua Villas and the top amateur woman wins a 6 night stay at the Outrigger Napili Shores.  Congrats to all those in contention, and if you are doing the Double and your name is not on this list, please advise our staff at packet pickup.
